In April 2023, AppalCART, the transportation provider for Appalachian State University and the Town of Boone, NC, issued a request for proposals for a real-time passenger information system. The goal was to enhance its 29-vehicle fixed-route service by providing accurate arrival times across multiple platforms, including web, text, and Dynamic Message Signs. Additionally, the system needed to include a management portal for dispatchers to monitor and manage operations efficiently.

Previously, AppalCart faced challenges with outdated systems that were difficult for passengers to navigate and made it cumbersome to generate essential reports. After evaluating several proposals, AppalCart selected ETA Transit for its strong reputation and robust capabilities.

A crucial requirement for AppalCart was implementing an accurate and user-friendly real-time tracking system that seamlessly integrates with its fleet. Ensuring that passengers had access to precise bus arrival predictions and operators had the tools needed for better service management was a priority. ETA Transit’s solution delivered on these needs, significantly improving operational efficiency and passenger experience.

The system provided by ETA Transit includes features such as real-time vehicle tracking, automated passenger count monitoring, and integrated data reporting. These enhancements have streamlined AppalCart’s operations, making it easier for staff to manage routes, track ridership, and provide timely service updates to passengers.

Passengers benefit from an intuitive mobile app that allows them to check live bus locations and arrival times, ensuring a smoother and more predictable travel experience. The integration of ETA Transit’s system has also improved dispatch operations, enabling staff to access real-time data and respond quickly to service inquiries.

Our overall experience with ETA Transit has been great. They’ve been an excellent vendor for us to work with for the AVL system, they have reliable hardware and we have very strong confidence in the information they make available to our passengers.

Through its partnership with ETA Transit, AppalCart has successfully enhanced its public transportation system, offering Boone and Watauga County residents a more dependable and accessible transit experience.
