A vehicle tracking system that monitors and reports the real-time position of each vehicle using Global Positioning Systems (GPS), Loran-C, or signpost transmitters combined with vehicle odometers. This information is relayed to a central dispatch or radio communications center and is often integrated with a Geographic Information System (GIS) for mapping. Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) systems assist transit dispatchers and provide real-time updates to travelers. Additionally, AVL data can be used for analyzing running time and on-time performance if combined with an archival reporting system.
